Replace that expensive gym membership with an in home exercise routine
As I’ve said before, there really isn’t much point in working toward our plan of slowing down and “retiring” early if we aren’t going to be healthy enough to enjoy it and that is where in home exercise comes in. For us, expensive gym memberships have never worked out in terms of value for money. We have hectic and somewhat unpredictable schedules that always make it hard to get into a routine and are often just too tired to go out to the gym or to get up extra early to go before our day begins.
The good news? There are some really great in home exercise options for getting a regular workout without getting bored. Some are even free options which, heck, what more could you ask for? And the best part is that you rarely need any fancy equipment. In fact, most often you need a yoga mat and some light weights (2lbs, 5lbs or 10lbs). The second best part? You can redeploy the money you were spending on your gym membership to your savings account to help get you to your goals even sooner.
Here are a few of the top options on the market:
- Fitness Blender offers high quality exercise programs that you can access through their youtube channel. They have approximately 350+ videos that run the full gamut in terms of length and difficulty level. Whether you are looking for a HIIT, kettle bell, or strength training you will find it here. You can also sign up for a free account to help track your progress. If you need something a bit more defined you can also purchase one of their workout/meal plans. I’ve really enjoyed their workouts especially because they can be accessed anywhere you have an internet connection.
- Beachbody On Demand offers you access to many of the most well-known at-home exercise programs including P90X, Insanity, Brazil Butt Lift, TurboFire and more. There is a free 30 day trial membership available.
Not only do you get access to stream the workouts but you also get the meal plans, workout calendar/plans, etc that you would receive if you purchased the individual workout. In addition, you can purchase “premium” content which is typically the newer exercise programs from BeachBody. They say that new workouts are added monthly. Having done many of these workouts I can tell you that you’ll feel your body working. ***Update, you can now get a full year of Beachbody on Demand with all of the programs.*** I’ve been doing the 3 Week Yoga Retreat and feeling great.
- Daily Burn is another on demand workout streaming service that offers a multitude of workouts across all genres from some top personal trainers. A 30 day trial is offered and then the services cost 12.99 a month which is still a huge bargain compared to most gym memberships. Nutrition and meal plans are also provided to help get you off on the right foot.
Need some home fitness equipment to get you started on your own in home exercise routine? Here are some of my favourite items. Please note that some of these links are affiliate links which means if you purchase something after visiting the link we may be compensated by the seller. We only recommend items that we have personally tried and found to be helpful.
Bowflex SelectTech Adjustable Dumbbells – these are pricey but we purchased a set of these because they are quick and easy to adjust the weight and they don’t take up much space which can be really important if you don’t have a dedicated workout space.
Extra Thick and Long and Comfort Foam Yoga/Exercise Mat – Exercise mats vary in price and in comfort. This one is priced around $20 and provides a great balance between comfort and firmness.
Resistance Bands are versatile and can help add a little resistance to your workout without using heavy weights.
